Mountain expeditions - Ojos del Salado 8 days

Ojos del Salado 6.893 m.

(19J, 0545374; 7001336)

Ojos del Salado is the highest active volcano in the world (6.893 m.) and the highest mountain in Chile. The best season to climb goes from October to March. It is a cold and windy mountain. It has two refuges: "Atacama" shelter at 5.100 and "Tejos" shelter at 5.750. We can transport expeditions by 4 WD vehicles up to "Atacama" shelter (if weather and snow conditions allow it).

We assume that our expeditionaries are used to climb mountains all over the year. We think we can trust on their experience. We can say that the shorter time you are at high altitude is better for your health. It's not convenient to try to get acclimatization above 5.000. So We propose to try to stay above that altitude the shorter time possible. for this reason we propose this schedule of climbing:

Day 1.- We meet the expedition before 2 P.M. in Copiapó (airport, bus station or hotel), or in Caldera and immediately start lo Laguna Santa Rosa at 3.600 and at 154 kmts. from Copiapó. Laguna Santa Rosa is a beautiful place with flamingos ("parinas", in the North of Chile), guanacos, and, of course, a wonderful lagoon. There we will camp for the rest of the day and also to sleep. In the evening we'll serve dinner after a short hiking.

Day 2.- Breakfast in the morning and starting for a hike to "Siete Hermanos" mountain (5.000 aprox) . After lunch we'll start to Laguna Verde(4.200) to camp there for two days. Dinner and sleeping there. In Laguna Verde there exists a rustic hot spring where you can take a delicious bath.

Day 3.- Breakfast and hiking to "Mulas Muertas" mountain (5.897). Climbing to the top takes 6 or 8 hours. Dinner and sleeping at "Laguna Verde".

Day 4.- Breakfast and hiking around the lagoon. Taking down the camp. Lunch and starting to "Atacama" Refuge (5.100), climbers must walk the last kilometers for best acclimatization. Camp at "Atacama" shelter; dinner and sleeping there.

Day 5.- Breakfast and transport of water, food and equipment to "Tejos" Refuge (5.750). This hike takes 3 hours more or less. Coming back to "Atacama" Refuge. Dinner and sleeping at "Atacama" Refuge.

Day 6.- Breakfast and early lunch. After lunch starting with your sleeping bag and equipment to "Tejos" Refuge. Dinner and sleeping at "Tejos" Refuge.

Day 7.- Breakfast very early in the morning and FIRST ATTEMPT TO THE SUMMIT (climbing to the top takes 8 hours more or less) and coming back to "Tejos" or "Atacama" Refuge.

Day 8.- Breakfast very early in the morning and SECOND ATTEMPT TO THE SUMMIT and coming back to "Atacama" Refuge. If first attempt was successful, taking down the camp and starting to Copiapó.

Day 9.- Breakfast and starting to Copiapó or Caldera.

The expedition includes; transport, food (breakfast, lunch and dinner, "summit food"), mountain guide, sleeping in "two persons" tents, all the gear support.

Do not include: personal equipment (sleeping bag for -25Cº, very warm clothes like Goretex, polar, plastic shoes, crampons, sticks, etc.) special trips, insurances, Admission tax to Ojos del Salado.

Brief description of AVENTURISMO expediciones:

Maximiliano Martinez Espinoza is the leader of this company, he was an instructor of the National Mountaineering School (ENAM) and he was Patrol Chief of the Mountain Search and Rescue group (CSA), as operating chief is Sebastian Martinez Illanes, Mountain Guide and Mountain Instructor ENAM. By the time Aventurismo Expediciones gives their services to more than 150 mountain climbers every season. Our Guides are bilingual and they are all very good climbers. They are between 25 and 35 being most of them University Professionals. Our clients come from all over the world and our enterprise or their owners are much known through climber’s handbooks of several countries.

Guide functions

A Mountain Guide is a Professional of the mountain tourism and the principal chief of the expedition. His aim is to guide the group by the best route and with the best weather conditions to the summit and to the camps again. Personal security of the climbers is one of the most important duties, so his decisions can’t be discussed by any climber. Our programs can be changed in some of their parts and, if necessary, you can talk with the Guide before about it.

(i.e.- To change an acclimatization day for a summit day). Assistants are to serve people and they receive orders only from the guide.

Duties of the expedition members:

To Obey the Guide’s instructions.

To participate actively in the group in order to get the aims. To have good will and cooperation. To help a partner in difficulties. None may remain alone in the mountain. To Inform the Guide as soon as possible, when a trouble may become a problem.

Amount of climbers by group.

We can give service from 1 (one), up to 20 (twenty) climbers by expedition.

The best number by expedition is 7.

The climbing season goes from November to March and the best time is December, January and the beginning of March.

Our Prices:

·The price is the same if you get the summit or not. In all cases payment must be done before begining the expedition: 30% to confirm your reservation, and at least with a month in advance, and the balance at the begining of the expe.

·If you can’t participate in an expedition you reserved, you can use that value (30%) for another expedition in another date.

Security and rescue:

In Atacama Región there is a system of rescue in the mountain formed by Carabineros (Polices) and the Army. They decided thay any emergency below 4.000m. will be done by Carabineros and above that altitude by the Army Patrols.

Mountains in Atacama Region don’t have rock climbing problems and the principal health problems are related with bad acclimatization and the very low temperatures that sometimes go below the -30ºC.

Most of these problem are related with climbers that climb alone or with guides with poor experience.

Our enterprise has a system of swift evacuation. It consists in to have in every moment a vehicle and its conductor for transpot the climber with these problems to a hospital in Copiapó (260 kmts. From Ojos del Salado) and 3 to 5 hours of travel. This service has a cost of US$250 by trip.

In Copiapó there are hospitals (public and private) that can assist any health problem during the 24 hours.and most of them accept Credit Cards.

No Helicopter services in the Region but the airport has unless 2 flights a day to Santiago.
